The world has lost over half of its coral reefs in the past 30 years due to climate change, overfishing, and pollution. Coral bleaching, which is caused by warmer ocean temperatures, is now ‘five times more frequent than 40 years ago. The scale of bleaching has been rising steadily in the last four decades, a study author tells Carbon Brief, with the global proportion of coral being hit by bleaching per year rising from 8% in the 1980s to 31% in 2016.
By 2050, nearly all the world's reefs will be at risk, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
